Position Summary
The Patient Care Technician is responsible for providing essential support to registered professional nurses in caring for patients. This role includes a variety of duties aimed at assisting with patient comfort and care during their hospital stay.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome patients and verify identification bracelets.
- Prepare patients for assessment/admission and assist with physical examinations and procedures.
- Perform blood draws using proper aseptic techniques and ensure appropriate labeling and processing of specimens.
- Conduct EKG tests as directed.
- Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of all necessary equipment.
- Assist in transporting patients to various departments as requested.
- Help prepare patients for meals and assist with feeding as necessary.
- Check and restock inventory of assigned area.
- Ensure that room environments are ready for patient admissions.
- Provide direct hygiene and comfort care, including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, and bed making.
- Take and document vital signs under the direction of the RN, and notify the RN of any changes in patient conditions.
- Perform and document glucose finger sticks and collect other specimens as required.
- Obtain and document daily patient weights and track intake and output.
- Create a safe environment for patients by responding to call lights promptly and communicating changes in conditions to the RN.
- Adapt care to meet the specific needs of diverse patient populations, including considerations for age, culture, language, and disabilities.
Contact and Schedule
Regular contact with medical center personnel, patients, and visitors is expected. The position requires working nights from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with a schedule of 3 shifts per week, every other weekend, and one holiday per season for a duration of 13 weeks.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of one year of recent Patient Care Technician experience in an acute care facility is required.
- Candidates must have strong competency in phlebotomy, EKG, vital signs, glucometer operation, and checking blood sugar.
- Must possess valid certifications in EKG, Phlebotomy, and Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Experience with respiration support equipment, including oxygen, trach, and vents, is preferred.
- Prior experience in high-volume emergency departments is highly beneficial.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with patient care software, specifically Epic, is preferred but not required as training will be provided.
Educational Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of a Patient Care Technician Program is required.
